The Subs I Call Back in Longview (and the Ones I Won't)
People ask me what makes a job go right. They think it's the plan, or the budget, or the permit. Those matter. But a job is only as good as the hands on it. I run lean. I'm the owner and I'm on site, not in a truck with a logo and a clipboard. So when I need a trade, I call people I've already bled with. Here's who I call back, and why.
My concrete guy doesn't guess
Concrete in East Texas is its own animal. The clay moves, the water table's a joke, and a slab poured by a guy who does driveways too will crack before the trim's on. I've got a concrete crew out of Kilgore I've run with for years. They read the ground, they pour for what's actually under the dirt, and they show up when they say. I had them fix a slab another builder botched on a shop build. The original was floating, no rebar tie-in, already heaving. They tore it, re-prepped, and poured it right. Cost the owner a do-over, but it's still flat four years later. That's the call I make. Pay once, do it right.
The sparky I've run with since '09
Electricians are where jobs die or live. A sloppy panel is a fire, a failed inspection, and a two-week slip. My electrician, the one I've run with since '09, pulls clean, labels everything, and never leaves me guessing on the rough-in. He'll tell me when the owner's ask is dumb, and he's usually right. I trust him with my name on the permit.
Framers who don't argue with the tape
I don't need framers who are fast and wrong. I need framers who measure twice and don't get cute. The crew I use treats an eighth of an inch like it's the law. On a tenant finish out in Longview last spring, they caught a wall the architect had drawn three inches into the hallway. Caught it before we built it. Saved the punch list and the callback.
The ones I don't call back
I'll be plain. If you no-show, if you bid low and nickel-and-dime the change orders, if your work needs a second guy to come fix it, you don't get a second call. I'd rather run short a trade and wait a week than hand a client a problem with my name on it. My reputation's the only thing that travels farther than my truck, and I'm not spending it on a sub who won't show.
Faith and family taught me this before construction did. Your word is what you leave behind. I run Sabine Built the same way I run my house.
